Kaidoku #1 & Welcome!

Kaidoku #1 (PDF)
Java applet

Hello and welcome to this new blog devoted (mostly) to the art of Kaidoku. I’ll be updating it every Thursday with a new puzzle for your enjoyment. If you don’t know what Kaidoku is, you can check out our various pages like the FAQ and Tips for Solving Kaidoku.

You’ll also notice that there are two ways to solve this puzzle. There’s a PDF you can print out and a java applet you can use for solving online. Feel free to try them both and if you have any suggestions for improving either, I’m all ears.

Enjoy the puzzle! New one from Matt on Monday.

Update: Mac users – are you having problems with the applet? Please let me know!

Update 2: Okay – I recompiled the java on my Mac and it appears to work on both Mac and PC now. Fingers crossed, but it looks like it works. Tell me if it doesn’t.

One idea for the app (and I’m not sure exactly how this would work). When I solved one on paper, I kept an AZ list and the corresponding numbers. Toward the end of the puzzle I can scan the unused letters and figure out which ones complete the short words.

So would there be a way to include at the bottom of the puzzle an AZ list which would be filled in with the numbers as they are entered in the grid?

Thanks,

Cole Kendall

Oh I see now that this is already on the PDF, but my idea was the reverse, an AZ list with blanks for the numbers.

And thanks again for the puzzle.

Cole -

That’s a great idea, but I’m pretty limited in my Java knowledge, so I’m not sure how to handle that. I’ll think about it, though.

Glad you enjoyed the puzzle!

Alex,

Love the idea of the blog (altho if I hadn’t been able to solve Matt’s puzzle last week, I don’t know if I would say that), but yes, I am a Mac user and the applet’s not showing up in either safari or firefox (Leopard 10.5.7). sps :(

Joon and Steve -

Try it again. I made a minor change in the applet. The big difference between Macs and PCs when it comes to java is the size of the buttons, so maybe that’s the problem? Keep me updated.

Tried to get the applet with both browsers again. Nada. Meanwhile, I solved the puzzle after printing it out. Nice work!

no dice for me, either. but i solved on paper, too.

Grr. I’ll tinker with it on my Mac when I get home tonight. It’s probably something really minor. It should be ready for next week’s puzzle, anyway.

The applet worked just fine for me, though I’m on a PC. The auto-fill made it a really quick solve, though like Cole said, not having the A-Z/1-26 list made things a little more difficult (my only mistake was LEMUR instead of FEMUR, but if I’d actually paid attention to what I was typing, I would have been fine).

Great puzzle, though, and I’m really excited about the blog!

Another Mac OS X 10.5.7 person where the applet didn’t work on either Safari 4.0.1 or Firefox 3.0.11 . Firefox reports “Loading Java Applet failed …”; both Safari and Firefox just show a sad little page with red X icon.

Man, who knew we had so many Mac users? Try it again tomorrow, after I’ve had a chance to work on it.

hey, the applet works now.

Awesome – thanks for the update.

I still don’t know what the problem was, but I seem to be able to fix it simply by compiling the java on my home computer.
