Kaidoku #80 & Deja Vu

Kaidoku #80 (PDF) | Java applet | JPZ (get Crossword Solver)

Joon mentioned on a Kaidoku a while back that getting the Q and the E right away didn’t actually help him very much. Well, I gotta tell you, I had pretty much the exact same experience with this one. The Q and the E jumped right out at me but it took me a while to get anything else right. Once I got it, though? No problem. How was your solving experience? Similar? Totally different? Let us know in the comments.

Today’s video has nothing to do with the puzzle but it’s something I loved in high school and hadn’t seen since. Oh, YouTube. Will you marry me?

I got a bit lucky… I tried SISSY at the bottom, which was wrong except for the Y. But it still gave me CYCLE and then ETYMOLOGY, so it was easy from there.

Hey, a visitor from Google that’s not a spider? Weird.

I always focus on the Q and the five vowels when solving, but the Y isn’t a bad place to start either. If it looks like a vowel, only there aren’t that many of them and it ends a lot of words, it’s probably the Y. Like in today’s puzzle – six Ys, but five of them end words. Dead giveaway.

yeah, the Y was definitely a dead giveaway (an idiom which i can no longer read without thinking of ESTATE). i would have blazed through this one except that you tricked me into looking for the Q first instead of vowels, which is what i usually do… i stuck the Q where the J belongs, and i eventually had to back out and start over. REALLY/RALLY/ALLEY was my entry point, as i suppose it was intended to be.
