Okay, I see where AJAR should have gone, but where did you try MISQUOTE, chi?

BTW, the answer to my question appears to be "no":

4.09 (a)

One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first,
second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning.
EXCEPTION: A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a
play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first
base; (2) by any runner being forced out; or (3) by a preceding runner who is
declared out because he failed to touch one of the bases.

That's funny. I got started with AJAR which got me going but also does not appear in the final grid.

Huh... thought it was 'MISQUOTE' but that was apparently enough to locate the real Q... how serendipitous!

Okay, I think I'm with you on everything but if this going to be on the midterm, I'll probably have forgotten it by then. Unless Rule 10.04(b) applies...

It took me WAY too much research, but I seem to have found the answer. A bases-loaded K+WP has occurred (from what I can tell) 20 times since 1950, most recently in 2009. You'll notice that Andre Ethier did not get an RBI for that plate appearance. Here's the video. Weird play!

I just looked at the official rules for getting an RBI and so I believe the answers to the quiz are:

a) Y, b) Y, c) N, d) Y, e) Y, f) Y, g) Y, h) Y, i) N, j) Y, k) N, l) N, m) Y.

Now (d) is the least clear to me based on the rules ... also, (j) is kind of weird ... if the shortstop can't handle the throw there's no error and hence an RBI, but if the first baseman can't handle it, it's an error, no RBI. Also, the rules explicitly state what happens when you reach first via hit, BB, HBP and catcher's interference (!) but not K+WP.

Here's the big one for me: if there's a WP on the first pitch, I think there's no RBI. If the WP comes on ball four, I think that is an RBI. If it's on a full count ... and the batter swings ... I think he doesn't get an RBI. Whereas he would have gotten an RBI had he not swung the bat. I think.

The "B" in "RBI" loses some meaning there, doesn't it?

I took advantage of a child-free trip to our local (AAA) ball park the other day to actually score a complete game. I had runners come in on both a wild pitch and a passed ball and didn't know what to do about the RBIs in either case. With this quiz, I can take some comfort in the fact that the breadth of my ignorance goes way beyond those two specific circumstances.

Nice quick solve. Interestingly, finding the O and the S was the way in for me on this. Not the usual path. Loved the video as well.

The five non-words in this puzzle are the last names of the five Atlanta Braves selected to play in Tuesday's all-star game. Unfortunately, it turns out INFANTE is actually a legitimate English word.
